The two main components of a "reflective vest" are fluorescent background materials and reflective materials. The fluorescent background material provides day time visibility and the reflective materials provides night time visibility. Some mateials provides both. it is the combination of these materials that provides for 24 hour visibility.
Most common are silver coloured reflective materials. The fluorescent materials however, are available in several different colours. Yellow and Orange are most common, but for garments that are used by non-professionals, colours such as pink, green and yellow/orange are being used.
A reflective material does only work at low light conditions and when there is a light source, e.g. car headlights. En reflex fungerar när det är mörkt och när det finns en ljuskälla, till exempel strålkastare på en bil. Reflexen är konstruerad så att det mesta av ljuset från en ljuskälla skickas tillbaka från reflexen till ljuskällan. Det innebär att en bilförare kan se dig flera sekunder tidigare än om du inte haft reflex. Om bilen kör i 70 km/tim hinner den köra i närmare 60 m under dessa sekunder.

There are standards and legislations for how a garment must be constructed and used. Not only does it exist norms and legislation for the use of garments in professional settings, but there are also norms for garments being used for sports and leisure. The norms are regulating the design, area needed of reflective and fluoresent materials as well as minimum requirements for such materials.
